Do you have material for your website that doesn't seem to fit as an article? For static information such as policies or guidebooks, there's a special content type you can use called a "book." You can see an example of this kind of content, which uses hierarchical navigation, in the Guidebook for Student Organizations.
Think about this particular type of content as an actual book. You have the title, each of the chapters, and then some of the chapters might have subsections. If you have content that could be served well with this sort of navigation, such as a guidebook, consider using the book content type.
In order to create a book, make sure you are logged in and that "https" appears before the URL. You should see a toolbar at the top, where you can click on "Add Content" (the farthest button to the left in the grey toolbar.) On the "Add content" page, click on "Basic page." This is where you will create your book. Add the title for your book, and a description if you have one. Click on "Book outline" (near the bottom) and select "create a new book" in the "Book" dropdown menu. Making sure "Published" is selected under "Publishing options," click "Save."
Next, you can create the outline of your book. Click "Add child page" to add the first section or chapter. After adding your title and body, select your book in the dropdown menu of the "Book outline" section. After publishing, you will see that this section appears as a link under the top level of the book. If you would like to add another section at the same level, click "Add child page." If you would like to add a subsection, make sure you are adding the child page under the section you would like.
In order to order the outline in the way you prefer, click on the gear on the top right corner of the top page of the book and select "Outline." You'll see the text "The outline feature allows you to include pages in the Book hierarchy, as well as move them within the hierarchy or to reorder an entire book." Click on "reorder an entire book" and follow the link to a page where you will see the titles of all of the books created on your site. To the right of the title of your book, click on "edit order and titles." Here, you can rearrange the order and outline of your book by dragging and dropping. You can place different sections under other sections just by dragging to the right like so:
You can also reorder your book by adjusting the weight under the "Book outline" section. Lower weights, like -10, will float to the top, while "heavier" weights like 10 will go toward the bottom. The pages are ordered first by weight and then by title if their weights are the same.
So there's just a few easy steps to creating this type of content:
- To create your book: Click "Add content" and choose Basic page. Add a title and select "create a new book" in the dropdown menu under the "Book outline" section.
- To add an outline: When you are at the top level, click "Add child page" to add sections or chapters. If you'd like a subsection, add a child page when you are in the appropriate section.
- To order your sections: Click the gear, go to "Outline" then "reorder an entire book," then "edit outline and titles." Here you can drag and drop sections as you please. You can also change the weights under "Book outline." Lower numbers will float to the top and higher numbers will go to the bottom.
