Many U-M domestic students do not have health insurance or adequate coverage. This lack of coverage may put their education at risk. Beginning this fall, U-M will offer a lower priced, voluntary health insurance for domestic students. This insurance plan has been available in the past, but the annual cost has been reduced to $1865 this year.
Health insurance for international students, scholars (and dependents) remains a requirement at U-M. The cost for F1 and J1 international students and scholars will be $1865 this year. This is an increase of $30 a month from last year’s rate.
In the past, the voluntary domestic and the mandatory international plans and claims were separate. This fall, the plans themselves will remain separate but the costs will be the same for all students. This will lead to more affordable plans for all U-M students.
The university is committed to offering all students access to affordable health insurance to protect against the financial hardship that may result from medical expenses. This affordable premium will allow more domestic students to participate and create a single price for health insurance for these populations.
